Civil Disobedience

The main thread contains the complete text of Henry David Thoreau’s essay Civil Disobedience (also known as Resistance to Civil Government). The comments represent some of the commentary his essay provoked, and some of Thoreau’s own elaborations of his arguments. I have sometimes edited these from how they appeared in their original form, for example to make them more concise, to bring them into the present tense, and to add social-media conventions like @-mentions. A few are more paraphrases than quotes.
